Frequent Asked Questions

  • If I’m interested in a volunteer position, how do I apply to the position?

From the Volunteer tab, click on the Volunteer Opportunities option, scroll down to see all available positions, click on “learn more” to read the job description, and click on “Apply” on the right side of the page.

  • Will any training or orientation be offered?

We would never think of placing you in a role without training! We provide a general orientation session all our volunteers regardless of the position they apply for, in addition to other training opportunities throughout the year.

  • Do you require background screening?

Yes. All of our roles require you to complete a vulnerable sector screening (police background check) prior to working with clients. If you do not have an existing screening that has been completed in the last 12 months, WoodGreen will provide you with the next steps to fill out an online application form for Toronto Police. Depending on your address, you need to apply for police check in your area. There may be a charge for this service as levied by you police jurisdiction.

However, you could be required to complete an online BackCheck for few positions that don’t involve in-person activities and direct contact with clients.

  • Is COVID Vaccination needed for all roles?

No, only few roles where you have a direct contact with vulnerable groups in the communities. In each position posted, there’s more information about vaccination requirements, if applicable.

  • What are COVID/health measure in place to protect volunteers?

For the roles involve direct contact with people, programs will provide cloth masks, sanitizers and face shields to the volunteer, and surgical masks to provide to clients if they do not have a mask during the visit. Also, some trainings are conducted to ensure that all precautions are taken into consideration by new volunteers.

  • I’m a high school student. Can I complete my 40-hour community involvement with WoodGreen?

Yes. We welcome high school students who want to volunteer during the summer. We do have limited opportunities for high school students however because of age restrictions. Please contact us for more details.

  • Who will you accept as a reference?

Where possible, we ask for professional references from an employer, school or other volunteer role. We understand that this is not always possible, and we do accept references from friends etc., just not immediate family members. It is very helpful if you connect with your references in advance to let them know we will be contacting them as this can help to speed up the recruitment process.

  • Do you provide reference letters to your volunteers?

We are happy to provide reference letters for volunteers who have completed their volunteer assignment with WoodGreen.
