Statement from WoodGreen’s Vice President of Housing Growth, Development & Asset Sustainability Mwarigha, on the federal government’s selection of Affordable Housing Fund

Toronto, ON – WoodGreen Community Services is grateful to be selected through the federal government’s Affordable Housing Fund (AHF) repairs and renewals funding stream, ensuring the repair and modernization of aging properties in WoodGreen’s community housing portfolio.

This sector investment of $105 million for the repair of 5,235 affordable homes includes building retrofits, upgrading aging building service and energy-consuming systems, and modernization of WoodGreen affordable buildings. This investment will also help achieve our goals of combating climate change through energy savings and most importantly in providing better quality of life for our tenants – including seniors, the recently homeless, persons with disabilities, single mothers and other low-income residents in need.

This investment today is crucial to upgrading Toronto and WoodGreen’s aging affordable housing stock. WoodGreen looks forward to continuing to partner with all levels of government to increase the supply of deeply affordable rental units, retrofitting and upgrading aging stock and exploring further solutions to streamline and accelerate the supply of affordable rental housing.

WoodGreen — with close to 1,500 deeply affordable housing units — is one of Toronto’s largest non-municipal affordable housing providers, offering safe and affordable homes to seniors, newcomers, youth, individuals with disabilities and people with a long history of homelessness. Our organization has an ambitious plan to own and/or manage 3,000 units within the next ten years.

ABOUT WOODGREEN COMMUNITY SERVICES (woodgreen.org): WoodGreen is one of the largest social service agencies in Toronto, serving 37,000 people each year. We offer over 75 programs and services tackling the social determinants that affect the health and well-being of individuals in our community.
