How to find a mentor or mentee in Toronto

Tureisha Hamlet, Manager of Public Relations and Corporate Communications

January is National Mentoring Month, a time to celebrate the profound impact that mentorship has on shaping lives and strengthening communities. Fostering growth and connections, mentorship empowers individuals to reach their full potential and drives positive change in countless ways.

WoodGreen’s Community Connections program highlights the transformative power of mentorship by pairing newcomers and Internationally Trained Professionals with volunteer mentors. The program helps mentees transition into Canadian society and the workplace while fostering mutual learning and shared experiences. Through strategic pairings based on professional backgrounds and career goals, the program supports both personal growth and career development, helping participants thrive in their new environment.

Empowering Newcomers for Career Advancement

One of the core offerings of the Community Connections program is career mentorship, which connects skilled newcomers with established Canadian mentors from similar professions. These relationships focus on building essential skills, such as refining resumes, preparing for interviews, and navigating the Canadian job market. By focusing on clear, actionable goals, career mentorship fosters confidence and opens doors to meaningful employment opportunities.

Mentorship in Action – Cally's Story

“D.Y. was mentored by me for 10 weeks and worked extremely hard during our meetings. She was always diligent with her homework and asked me many questions over the course of our time together. She improved her English, so much so that we ended up working on a resume for her at the end because I thought she was more than ready to find a job. She went for an interview using the resume we built together and got a good job in a busy dental office as a receptionist. She adores her boss, and they apparently adore her as I did when I mentored her!” - Cally Specht, Community Connections Mentor

Providing Support to Overcome Language Barriers

Language and cultural differences can feel overwhelming for newcomers, but with the help of a supportive mentor, those barriers can be broken down. The Community Connections program provides a range of English language training sessions, such as English Conversation Circles, Pronunciation Workshops, and Public Speaking Clubs. These sessions create a welcoming environment for participants to practice and grow in their communication skills.

Mentorship in Action – Angélica’s Story

“The program with my mentor Cally was a wonderful experience. I learned a lot from her since she transcended my expectations. From a conversation class for more than an hour, I learned about history and many other very interesting topics as a newcomer to Canada.

I think that the program is very useful and helps newcomers to break paradigms, fears and mental barriers that are created by lack of experience and lack of knowledge of the language.” - Angélica Monteagudo Waclawik, Community Connections Mentee

Cultivating Resilience and Professional Networks

Through professional networking opportunities offered by Community Connections, mentees are able to meet volunteers, employers, and guest speakers from diverse industries. These connections provide valuable insights into Canadian business culture and foster networking skills critical for professional success. By combining mentorship with networking, participants build strong professional relationships and develop the resilience needed to navigate a competitive job market.

Mentorship in Action – Bilal’s Story

“From our very first interaction, John proved to be an exceptional mentor. He listened intently to my professional journey and was genuinely committed to supporting me in every way possible. Together, we set clear goals, focusing on crafting tailored resumes and cover letters, developing networking strategies, and navigating the Canadian job market. John’s guidance was instrumental in helping me understand the nuances of the Canadian job market and positioning myself effectively.

John’s support went beyond professional advice; he encouraged resilience, adaptability, and perseverance. His dedication to mentoring extended far beyond helping me secure employment. He empowered me to face challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement. His mentorship has truly been a cornerstone in my journey of integration and success in Canada.

To all newcomers considering the WoodGreen’s mentorship program, I want to emphasize that this program is more than a pathway to employment—it is a journey of self-discovery and resilience. It equips you with the tools, confidence, and mindset needed to thrive in Canada. As John often says, ‘Success is not just about landing a job; it’s about building the resilience to navigate the journey.’” - Bilal Saleem, Community Connections Mentee

Fostering Personal Growth and Community Impact

Mentorship is a two-way journey where mentors also gain invaluable insights while helping others. Programs like Community Connections allow mentors to refine their communication, leadership, and cultural awareness skills while making a meaningful difference in someone’s life. These experiences enrich the mentor’s perspective and contribute to building inclusive and connected communities.

Mentorship in Action – Ian's Story

“One memorable moment that stands out for me is financial security, such as helping a mentee secure their first job in Canada or seeing a mentee grow in confidence and economic skills. Witnessing the positive impact of our sessions not only reaffirmed the importance of this program but also gave me a sense of fulfillment knowing I could contribute to someone’s success.

To those considering becoming a mentor, I would wholeheartedly encourage them to join. The opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life while simultaneously growing as an individual is unparalleled. It’s a chance to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and foster relationships that can last a lifetime.” - Ian Power, Community Connections Mentor
