WoodGreen’s Seniors’ Care and Wellness team supports the health and independence of seniors in the community. Our Friendly Visitor program offers connection and companionship to seniors through social visits and wellness checks. We are seeking caring and compassionate individuals to join our team of volunteers.
Responsibilities
- Visit clients on a weekly basis and engage in friendly conversation
- Work with clients to establish short- and long-term goals to enhance their independence and social connections and improve their quality of life
- Motivate clients to participate in social and recreational activities and plan weekly leisure activities that provide cognitive stimulation, including reading, writing, crafts, games and outings
- Facilitate a Home Support Exercise Program for frail and homebound seniors (training will be provided)
- Provide information to clients on services offered by WoodGreen and other community agencies
- Adhere to the Client Bill of Rights and follow WoodGreen’s policies, procedures and program-specific guidelines
- Record monthly hours and activities and report any incidences, accidents or concerns to the Program Coordinator
What You Bring to the Team:
- 18 years of age or older
- Excellent communication and active listening skills, empathy, patience and tact
- Good knowledge of and sensitivity to ageing issues and challenges
- Enjoy interacting with seniors, with creative ideas for social and leisure activities
- Self-directed, independent, flexible and exercise good judgment
- Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and build strong working relationships
Shift Hours:
- Flexible scheduling depending on client and volunteer availability. Most of our clients prefer to meet during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Commitment:
- Up to 1–2 hours per week
- 3-month minimum commitment
Training
- Orientation to WoodGreen’s programs, policies and procedures (Virtual)
- Senior Support Service Training (Virtual)
- Professional Development Training (In-person).
