In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will experience a mental health challenge or illness. Mental health issues affect people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds, however, systemic inequalities such as poverty, racism, discrimination and gender-based violence can worsen outcomes and limit access to appropriate care.
Levels of distress and anxiety spiked during the pandemic, as did the demand for mental health services. Research indicates, however, that half of Canadians have to wait up to 1 month to see a professional in their community, while 1 in 10 people wait 4 months or longer. In some parts of the country, children and youth can wait years to access the support they need.
